Whiplash, the story that needs to be told...

A whiplash injury happens when the head undergoes a sudden sharp ‘whipping’ movement. It often occurs in traffic accidents, when two vehicles (or a number of vehicles) collide. It also can happen in sporting injuries, such as contact sport and in slipping accidents.

In a head-on motor accident, the injured is restrained by seatbelt. This causes hyperflexion and then hyperextension.

In rear-end motor accidents, the opposite is true. In simple terms, your shoulders move forward, until they’re under your head. As your head tilts downwards, your neck extends forwards. When your car comes to a halt, perhaps by your braking, then your head is thrown backwards. The muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves become damaged and this causes the painful discomfort.

An injured person may suffer with localised neck pain, localised shoulder pain, headaches, restricted movement to the head, tinnitus, buzzing in the ears, unsteadiness, nausea and even blurred vision.

Whiplash injuries can cause symptoms to continue for many months.

Often, the pain and discomfort does not become apparent until the next day. As soon as you realise that your have suffered an injury – seek medical advice.

Your General Practitioner will advise you if an x-ray is necessary. Also, s/he will prescribe suitable painkillers to ease the symptoms.
